The Ripple: Green Dreamer & Leader Event

Many people in the South Sound community wake up knowing there are environmental issues in our backyard, and want to get involved. People want to know what they can do, how can we contribute. Some people are already taking great actions. Others want to but might not know where to start.

What they have in common? They want to connect with others like them. Be a part of something bigger. Take care of their home. Be inspired.

Ocean5 and Rainier Apparel have interacted with many groups who share a passion for making sustainable choices in our home community. This event is about sharing stories and connecting people with organizations and opportunities to take action.

We are hosting this event to inspire people to take the first step.

Each person’s action, no matter how small, can together make a big difference together.

On the 6th anniversary of the Rana Plaza factory collapse, which killed 1,138 people and injured many more in 2013, we encourage millions of people to ask brands #whomademyclothes and demand greater transparency in the fashion supply chain.

The more people who ask #whomademyclothes, the more brands will listen. Use your voice and your power to change the fashion industry. Together we are stronger.

Join us during this week by calling out your favorite brands via Social Media with the #WhoMadeMyClothes ~ FashionRevolution.Org

The Chayah Movement and TiltedCanvas253 Presents ThreadPaint!

Paint Night with Sustainability in Mind -- Fall Back In Love with Those Jeans!

At this event,

The Cherry Blossom design is the instructed paint theme of the night, but you can design and hand paint your very own design on YOUR garment, as well!

Pull out that denim piece from your closet that could use a touch of TLC and Self Expression!

Our unique goal is that you revive YOUR overlooked, denim garment that is not being worn!

Create a buzz around your unique, hand painted fashion piece because nobody is doing "Paint Nights" of this caliber. Use this night to add some sass and personal style to your OWN denim.

-------

What's included:

-Light Bites and Beverage

-Paint, Stencils and necessary paint supplies (Including Aprons to borrow or purchase)

-Freehand or Step by step -- 1 hour design instruction by TiltedCanvas253

-Great Music

-Lots of Fun!

------

What to bring:

- 1 denim or other clothing item to paint

-------

FAQ:

Is there an age limit? 18 and over

Can I leave with my artwork? Yes, it will dry during the event and be ready to take home by the end.

Will the paint wash off what I am wearing? No, we will be using acrylic paint and permanent markers, aprons will be available but please wear something you don't mind getting paint on - accidents happen!

Will garments be available for purchase if I forget mine? Yes! We will have shirts and denim available for purchase.

--------

Reviving your forgotten about item, not only gives it a 2nd life, but prolongs the lifespan of the garment creating sustainability in your wardrobe and minimizing waste in our landfills.

Unlock your inner artist and join us for this unique experience!

IMPORTANT NOTE: The venue is not ADA compliant and there are stairs into the building and to the space of the event. Our apologies for this inconvenience.

The True Cost - Documentary Screening and Panel Discussion

The Chayah Movement, Zero Waste Washington and Tacoma Tool Library are collaborating to bring the Tacoma community this ground breaking documentary, followed by a brief discussion with industry experts.

What is The True Cost?

This is a story about clothing. It’s about the clothes we wear, the people who make them, and the impact the fashion industry is having on our world and why we are seeing a shift in the fashion industry. The price of clothing has been decreasing for decades, while the human and environmental costs have grown dramatically. The True Cost pulls back the curtain on the untold story and asks us to consider, who really pays the price for clothing we choose to buy? What are we truly investing in?

Filmed in countries all over the world, from the brightest runways to the darkest slums, and featuring interviews with the world’s leading influencers including Stella McCartney, Livia Firth and Vandana Shiva, The True Cost is an unprecedented project that invites us on an eye opening journey around the world and into the lives of the many people and places behind our clothes.

Event Attendees will walk away with practical and immediate ways in which they can buy and donate more responsibly. The Chayah Movement will share their favorite ethical brands, connect you to an app where you can see how your favorite brands are rated, and give you a list of places where your unwanted threads can live on past you.

FREE - FixIt Fair - ZeroWaste and TacomaToolEvent

Fix-it Fairs are 3-hour events held at various sites throughout Tacoma, with the intention of making them accessible to all.

At these events, community members bring items that need to be fixed for free, such as: jewelry, crockery, clothing, small appliances, furniture, toys and electronics.

BENEFITS OF FIX-IT FAIR TACOMA

  • Repair your stuff - bring your broken items and get them repaired by skilled fixers

  • Community building - Meet and chat your neighbors, connect with contractors for help with home projects

  • Family friendly - Children are welcome, enjoy games, food and books

  • Waste reduction - Instead of throwing it away, give your item new life by getting it repaired

  • Learning opportunities - apprenticeships, community resources/information

WHAT YOU CAN BRING TO A FIX-IT FAIR:

Most items are welcome for free repair. We specialize in mendable clothing, lamps, small appliances, computers, electronics, sewing machines, toys, and outdoor equipment.

  • We can repair up to two items per visit (if there is time at the end of a fair, more items can be repaired)

  • You must be present during the repair.

  • There is no assurance an item can be repaired, or that attending to fix it won’t break it even more.

  • Please only bring items small enough to be easily carried in by one person.

  • Do not bring any items that are leaking, dangerous, contain gasoline, or have a strong odor.

  • Clothing and other textiles that you bring in for mending should be washed first.

  • If your item needs a part, save time and bring the new part with you.

Donate and recycle all UNWANTED Threads and more in ANY condition!!!

The following items will be accepted for recycling and donation efforts to benefit BigBrotherBigSisters of Puget Sound reallocated by TheChayahMovement:
